Dr. Maanik Nath
Assistant Professor of Social and Economic History
Utrecht University
Nath’s work investigates the interactions between climate, law, and development in modern history. He uses innovative interdisciplinary methods to analyze under-studied regions of the world such as South- and South-East Asia. A recent study developed an innovative explanation of failed institutional transplants, showing how low savings restricted the role of social cohesion as a tool for financial regulation of the Indian cooperative sector. In his work, he bridges economic theory and historical evidence, as exemplified in his forthcoming (July 2023) book Capital Shortage.
