Van der Toorn studies the social psychological mechanisms through which majority and minority group members contribute to inequalities at work and in society. She leads the Netherlands Inclusiveness Monitor, established to diagnose, benchmark, and improve diversity and inclusion policies for organizations. Van der Toorn has received many research grants, e.g., from the Goldschmeding Foundation, and is part of an EU COST action on LGBT+ social and economic (in)equalities. She co-founded the first annual LGBTQI+ Studies Conference in 2020, supported by the European Association of Social Psychology.
