About Jan

I am associate professor of Ethics at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).

Joined the VU in 2013, with a Veni project on strategic ignorance – e.g. whether consumers can be held responsible for strategically ignorant wrongdoing (such as meat consumption).

My group and I are currently working on collective harms (some info).

One of my claims is that we should not fly because we should not make an unfair exception for ourselves: https://jjwwieland.nl/outreach/

I teach on all sorts of responsibility questions. Do companies like Shell have a responsibility to help fight climate change? To what extent can the food industry be held responsible for our health? Should the government take more responsibility? Should we take responsibility for our history of colonialism? Who’s responsible for what AI does?
