I am a Dutch philosopher and psychiatrist, and my work focuses on ethics, neuroscience, and criminal law. I am Professor of Ethics, with a focus on bioethics, in the Department of Philosophy at VU University Amsterdam, and Professor of Forensic Psychiatry at Utrecht University.
My research explores criminal responsibility, neurotechnology in criminal justice, and the ethical implications of advances in neuroscience and forensic psychiatry. I have published widely on neurolaw, legal insanity, and brain-based technologies in psychiatry, and I am the author of the monograph Legal Insanity: Explorations in Psychiatry, Law, and Ethics (2016).
In addition to my academic work, I practice as a psychiatrist and advise the Nederlands Instituut voor Forensische Psychiatrie en Psychologie. I also lead research projects on the ethical and legal evaluation of neurotechnologies in criminal justice, including a major project funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO).
