About Matthijs

I am theme leader of “Families and Gender” at NIDI and full Professor of Sociology at the University of Groningen.

I received my Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1991. My research areas are family sociology, social demography, inequality, and migration/ethnicity.

I have (co-)coordinated several large-scale social surveys in the Netherlands, including the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (NKPS), the Netherlands Longitudinal Lifecourse Study (NELLS), and more recently, the multi-actor survey Parents and Children in the Netherlands (OKiN). I was inaugurated into the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW), and the Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe).
