About Rense

I am an associate professor (with ius promovendi) at the Department of Sociology at Utrecht University. My research focuses on cooperation, trust, and the dynamics of social networks. I study these themes across a range of empirical contexts, including adolescent networks, social media, the sharing economy, online criminal networks, and laboratory experiments.

In 2016, I received an NWO Vidi grant for a research project on the origins and consequences of trust in the sharing economy. I co-direct the ELSE laboratory for experimental research at Utrecht University and lead a project within the ODISSEI consortium aimed at developing infrastructure for large-scale online experiments.

I obtained my PhD in social sciences in 2009 and my master’s degree in sociology in 2004, both from Utrecht University.
